Learning at Summerland

Our Future Focused Approach to Learning

The Whole Child, The Whole Time

Part of nurturing holistic learning is by offering student led learning. As their education unfolds, our students can partake in ‘Rich Learning’ and ‘Peak Activities’, allowing their interests to guide their learning, developing not just knowledge but the ability to teach oneself and to apply it to different contexts and real life scenarios.

We also offer a wonderful variety of sports, art and drama, and build programs around student interests. A child’s spiritual, social and emotional development are as important to us as their grades, that’s why we have such a focus on providing a full and enriching College community and a wide range of activities that students can collaborate through. We love our learning to be collaborative, connective and provide real world value.

A Strong Foundation

Literacy and numeracy skills are absolutely essential to make future learning accessible. That’s why our early education in literacy and numeracy fundamentals build great vocabulary and fluency with numbers become second nature to our primary school students. From this solid base, we embrace real life scenarios to bring additional value to students and integrate things like budgeting for living expenses and business start ups as part of our math program. At Summerland Christian College literacy and numeracy skill development is embedded across all Key Learning Areas.

Learning Enrichment

We understand that not all children naturally thrive at academic learning, so we have a talented Learning Enrichment Team offering support to children in ways that they can identify with. Kinesthetic, visual, and auditory learners are all catered for through our learning enrichment aids in the classroom, or where needed 1:1 learning can be facilitated even into secondary school with special purpose built study areas

Our team provide direction, care and support from one-on-one support, group learning, teacher assistance and pastoral and well-being programs. We are fluent in partnering with parents and external professionals to ensure our students needs are met holistically.

Embracing Technology for the Future

In preparing our students for their hope-filled futures, we realise that technological change, ongoing globalisation and other innovations like ‘AI’ will be disruptive to many industries, but will also unlock new opportunities and create new roles for our students as they enter the workforce.

As our teachers and leaders of learning, design deeper learning, and cultivate learning environments that best accommodate for it, we will be providing explicit instruction on what these key capacities, or dispositions, look like and opportunities for students to practice this, as well as reflect and measure their growth in them.
